| Associate Editor DC Open (J#45115) Title: Associate Editor Company: UBM Global Trade Description The associate editor for rail and regulatory affairs is responsible for coverage of the railroad industry and its related businesses, including shipper-customers and suppliers, and the impact of legislation, regulation and lobbying on the business. The reporter will be advance the publication s mission of providing high-level, exclusive and informed news, information and insight for readers concerned with managing supply chains and transportation for their businesses. This position will include call for reporting in two areas: First, covering the railroad industry, including major railroads, their customers and equipment suppliers, and their role in larger supply chains, including financial results of operators, competition and trends in the drivers of business such as the movement of commodities and how those industry trends fit into broader economic trends; Second, it will include coverage of the regulatory and legislative developments that affect the business and business relationships, including developments in Congress and at agencies such as the Department of Transportation and the Surface Transportation Board that regulate railroad operations and provide financial support or oversight of rail and transportation operations. The position may be called on at times to assist in coverage outside the primary area of coverage, including developments in the legislative and political sphere. Duties will include: - Generating and writing one to three stories per week for the print edition, including periodic features and cover stories, on trends and developments in the industry. - Providing with stories charts and analysis related to stories. - Write five to 10 stories per week for the web site on news events, including earnings reports, traffic trends and reports, interviews, legislative and regulatory actions and other breaking news. - Provide on a periodic basis video and audio reports for the digital environment. - Take part in advancing the publication s online presence by using social media tools to built the identity of the publication and the report in the online community. - Take part in industry events and in JOC-organized webcasts and conferences as a moderator and presenter to advance the identity of the publication and the reporter in the industry. Generate ideas for potential webcasts based on industry trends and help organize such events. Requirements Experience and requirements: - Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or a similar field of study; - 2-3 years experience editing and writing news in a deadline environment, with experience in business writing a plus and experience in the supply chain and transportation world a strong plus; - Ability to make reasoned, dependable decisions in a fast-paced, deadline-driven publishing business; - The ability to spot trends, look at financial and operating reports and understand what they mean for business; - A keen interest in business reporting, the creativity to put that interest to use in a dynamic publishing business covering global industries and a curiosity to drive in-depth learning and knowledge about industry and the global economy.
